Janessa Blake
I am a Tetlit Gwich'in from Fort McPherson NT. In 2018 I was taught how to brick stitch by my sister-in-law, and ever since then I have been coming up with new designs and patterns to represent my work as my own. I came up with a statement earrings I call "Protect The Peel" earrings, they feature a caribou amongst the mountains with a flowing creek with Nakals (cloud berries) and cranberries. This pair of earrings is one of my most popular earrings I have ever made.. I came up with this design while away from home for university, and now I hope someday they can/will bring awareness on Protecting the Peel. I also taught myself how to tuft in 2021, and am now incorporating both caribou hair tufting and caribou antlers in my most recent work!
